FINAL YEAR PROJECT 1 (WEEK 3): Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM)

Objectives:

1) To study Global System for Mobile Communication
2) To know how GSM Modem works

Method:

1) Making research in the internet

Results:

Device control through SMS using SIM300 and AT89S52

Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM) is a digital mobile telephone system. It is widely used in Eurpoe and other parts of the world. GSM digitizes  and compresses data and it sends to a channel with two other streams of user data. EAch of it has each its own time slot. It operates at either the 900 MHz or 1800 MHz frequency band. For practical and everyday purposes, GSM offers users wider international roaming capabilities than other U.S network technologies and can enable a cell phone to be a "world phone". Since many GSM network operators have roaming agreements with foreign operators, users can often continue to use their mobile phones when they travel to other countries. Subscriber Identity Module(SIM) cards holding home network access configurations may be switched to those will metered local access. It is significantly reducing roaming costs while experiencing no reductions in service. It acts as your digital identity because it is tied to your cell phone service carrier's network rather than to the handset itself which allows for easy exchange from one phone to another without new cell phone service activation. GSM uses digital technology and is a second-generation wireless digital technology (2G) cell phone system. In this project, GSM Modem SIM 300 can fit almost all the space requirement in your application, such as smart phone, PDA phone and other mobile device. It comes with a standard RS232 interface which can be used easily to interface the modem to microcontrollers and computers. The operating voltage is around at 7-15V AC or DC and the board has onboard rectifier.

Conclusion:
This week I am going to explain the part of the components that will be used in this project. It is GSM modem which can send messages and receive the messages. This part will apply as to send the location of the accident's place to the ambulance and family members so that they will rescue the motorcyclist which involved in the accident. Thus, the ambulance and family members can arrive at the aciident's place in a short time and we can save half the lives that are lost due to the accidents occured.

FINAL YEAR PROJECT 1 (WEEK 2): What is smart helmet by using microcontroller?

Objectives:

1) To give an overview about my FYP
2) To make an introduction about my FYP

Methods:

1) By making researches in the internet
2) By searching the technology devices used in the project

Results:

This project is about safety helmet which is basically provided for motorcyclist. It is called as a smart helmet as it it very useful when the motorcyclist had an accident on the road. The smart helmet consists of GSM technology so that it can send SMS to give information about the accident to the ambulance and family members. Other than that, GPS technology also makes the smart helmet is a very useful as it can extract the location of the accident which contains the latitude and longitude values about accident's place. It is included in the SMS so that the ambulance will have the information about the accident occured. Furthermore, pressure sensor also used in the project as it can detect whether the motorcyclist wearing the helmet or not. the motorcycle cannot starts if the person does not wearing it. The alcohol sensor also used in this project for a safety reason as it can sense the alcoholic content whether the motorcyclist is drunken or not. if the alcohol sensor detects it, the motorcycle cannot start as the alcohol detected on LCD display. Another thing that can be very helpful for this smart helmet is vibration sensor. when the motorcyclist had a crashed, the helmet hits the ground and the vibration that had created when the helmet hits on the ground detects by vibration sensor. The microcontroller used for this project is P89V51RD2 type which is also 80C51 microcontrollers. The LED is ON to indicates that power is supplied to the circuit when the system is switch on. The RF is used for start the two wheeler firstly by checking whether the motorcyclist is drunken or not. The motorcycle cannot starts if the motorcyclist is drunk. In normal condition, the helmet has a pressure sensor which senses pressure and the RF transmitter radiates the FM modulated signal. The RF receiver is connected with the motorcycle which is receiving the radiated signal and the relay activate after it. The relay is remove the ignition wire from the ground and connected with the starter switch and the motorcycle will start. When driver met with accident vibration sensor sends message to microcontroller which means that the smart helmet is very safe to use as the system has been circulated starting from when the person wear the helmet until the person met an unexpected accident.

Conclusion:

This week I am going to give an overview about my final year project at title smart helmet by using microcontroller. There are many technologies that can be used to create the smart helmet such as by using Arduino. This project can be improvise by placed a speed limiter as to restrict driving at high speed. Other than that, it is also can improved by using solar energy to power the circuit so that it uses green energy and does not harm to environment. This project can decrease the case of accidents between the motorcyclists besides can save more lives.

FINAL YEAR PROJECT 1 (WEEK 1)

Final Year Project (FYP) is a must because it is a requirement to complete our studies at UniKL BMI. To be a Bachelor of Engineering Technology(HONS) in Electronics holders, we must undergo two semesters to complete this task in order for us to graduate. Each students need to select and present their own FYP project title to their supervisor in order for the supervisor to guide him. first week is for the students must select a title and proposed the title to the supervisor. so that the sueprvisor can guide them for two semesters.

As for me, I have been assigned to do a smart helmet by using microcontroller which will be supervised by Sir Izwan Arief Bin Abd Malik. It is a complicated journey for me but hopefully it can be done very well soon. This blog is my log book which will stated about what I have been researching when doing this project. It is a first step of this project so that I can see the flow when doing this project.
